Smaller than a fingernail, intaglios were a popular form of identification and fashion. This example, set in a silver ring, was discovered at Balkerne Gate and shows a man with a laurel wreath around his head. Who it's meant to represent remains a mystery...

This amazing image by Peter Lorimer imagines how dead were laid to rest. The Romans knew it was unhealthy to keep bodies within the city walls, so the roads leading from Colchester would have been lined with tombstones.

"Mosaic of the Wrestling Cupids", was created about 175 AD. It was excavated in 1979 from a large Roman house just outside the town wall. Sadly parts have been lost over time, but this drawing fills in a few of those gaps.
