Dominique, as well as being a member of our volunteer team, is also a talented artist, & often paints some of the wildlife that she sees whilst working in the #LDV - these drawings followed a ringing session last week where Snipe, Jack Snipe & Grey Partridge were all ringed 🎨🖌️
Thanks to #LDV volunteer Dominique Vassie for sharing some of her fabulous sketches of the birds caught last week during the wader catch - more of Dominique’s work can be viewed on her Instagram account https://t.co/8AWbY5KFRd
Our 2019 ringing totals are now in - 8123 birds (108 sp) were ringed here last year inc. 2400 warblers, 1700 waterfowl, 1400 finches/sparrows/buntings & 500 thrushes. Great effort by our team collecting valuable data on movements, populations, trends & productivity @YorkBirding
Nice recovery of a Sedge Warbler just in from the @_BTO: ringed at Wheldrake on 24th July this year - re-trapped 19 days later by ringers in Belgium, at Gembergen, Oost-Valaanderen – a movement of 465km @YorkBirding
The best way to appreciate the scale of the flooding and the water storage benefit of the valley is from the air - this image was taken looking south from Sutton upon Derwent, with Wheldrake in mid-view - visible to birds passing over from miles away @YorkBirding
Nice to receive some flight shots of one of the Spotted Crakes seen throughout the day yesterday at Wheldrake – well captured by Hugo Charlton-Jones @YorkBirding
A surprise catch was had of a young Tawny Owl yesterday – roosting in the swan pipe at @YorksWildlife Wheldrake Ings @YorkBirding @YorksDCP
It’s been a great year in the #LDV for Garganey, with at least 4 broods (21 young fledged). Nice to catch and colour-ring a near fledged juvenile male at the weekend, which will hopefully generate more re-sightings and data – @ukrbbp @_BTO @KaneBrides @YorkBirding @YorksWildlife
Staggering catch in the #LDV moth trap yesterday morning - 432 moths of 36 species inc. Cream-bordered Green Pea, Green Silver-lines, Beautiful Hook-tip, Peach Blossom and 32 Hawk-moths (11 Eyed, 8 Poplar, 13 Elephant) @BC_Yorkshire
