Lead John Turner has difficulty modulating his performance — he’s perfectly fine in quiet scenes but when things get heated he shouts his lines in his costars’ faces. THE BLACK TORMENT is diverting enough, even if you spend the whole of it wishing Vincent Price was the star.

It’s fitting that Turhan Bey should steal the show as THE AMAZING MR. X (1948), a bogus seer putting the squeeze on socialite Lynn Bari, but cinematographer John Alton is the perfect partner in crime. The Crane Wilbur story is no great shakes but you can’t look away.
