This was an absolutely fascinating read. Using mostly courts martial records it reconstructs one of the bloodiest mutinies in the history of the RN, that of HMS Hermione in 1797. Pope’s Ramage series has long been my favourite fiction of the period & this is just as readable.

Piper George Clarke of the 71st (Highland) Regt. was wounded but carried on playing to spur the highlanders on, & they later captured General Brenier. Clarke depicted here at the battle and playing the pipes presented to him by the Highland Society..

17 August 1808 - The Battle of Roliça. Général de Division Henri François Delaborde fights an expert rearguard action & delays the advance of Lt. Gen. Sir Arthur Wellesley’s forces. Delaborde’s division was the best that the French had in Portugal, but was outnumbered 4:1.

21 June 1798 Battle of Vinegar Hill - Forces under General Lake encircle large rebel camp. At dawn columns rapidly advance after heavy bombardment. Rebels fired on from all sides, resistance crumbles. Many manage to retreat but many others are slaughtered & the women raped.

French retreat to redoubts on heights. Allied forces advance and series of attacks & counter attacks result in allies occupying heights overlooking town. Soult withdraws on 11th. Allied losses 4,568, French 3,236. Wellington learns of abdication on 12th. Armistice signed 17th.

4th & Light Divs jump down into water-filled ditches before climbing up breach, while French throw grenades, blow mines & keep up incessant musket & cannon fire. Attack after attack is driven back with very heavy casualties. Their assault fails.

And lastly the only rifleman of the 5/60th to feature on a stamp. Lt. Col. Charles-Michel d'Irumberry de Salaberry. On the books of the battalion for some years but spent very little time with them. He was given command of the Canadian Voltigeurs and rose to fame in War of 1812.

17 August 1808 Battle of Roliça. General Henri Delaborde conducts an expert rear-guard action against the forces of Sir Arthur Wellesley. 5/60th engaged on both flanks, skirmishing through woods and over steep hills. Battalion casualties 6 KIA, 42 wounded, 6 MIA.
