The Portico's 1781 Icones Plantarum Rariorum contains delicately coloured drawings such as this of the flower salsify (or goatsbeard).
Its compiler, Nikolaus Jacquin, traveled extensively in the Caribbean and Central America and was close with Mozart and Alexander von Humboldt.
Due to travel disruption today caused by snow and ice, the Library will be open from 10am to 4pm. We are sorry for any inconvenience caused.
Congratulations if you got John Milton. The Library's 1688 copy was the first ever illustrated edition to be published in England. You can find out more at https://t.co/zFadREfnUs
Schools seem happy with their gifted notebooks from the PSMAwards! 'Especially as they feature local icons! You may get a few knocks on the door from children in my class who want to see the Portico. I hope I haven't over sold the secret door/windy stairway/magic library stuff😀'
Today is #WorldPoetryDay and we have a question for you. Should poetry be performed or read in contemplative silence? John Milton (writer of the epic poem Paradise Lost) dictated his later work after he lost his sight. How do you read or write poetry?
