#SoftPastels are composed of pigment, water and a smaller amount of binder. They create intense colour. Because they can't be mixed on a palette many artists use an extensive range of colours.

I can't do a feature on #birds without mentioning John J. Audubon’s 'Birds of America'. Around 1820, Audubon declared his intention to paint every bird in North America.

A Lincolnshire Stream (1882) by Joseph Crawhall (1861-1913), one of the #Glasgow boys, and another of my favourites. He painted many birds in his career. Technically this one is a landscape #painting, but it's the birds that bring the magic to the composition.
