Dazzle, unlike "blending in" of crypsis camouflage, credited to zoologist John Kerr, used contrasting colours & stripes to mask size, speed and shape of machines at sea (be it planes or ships). Despite popularity in 1910s, it is unknown if the paint patterns actually worked well.
