Under this new system, recruiting workers (“kanganis”) sourced labourers from their hometowns, receiving commission for each day worked by the labourer they had recruited.
Indian and Chinese labourers made up the majority of workers in the rubber plantations. European plantation owners needed a cheap and stable supply of labour, which led to an indenture labour system specifically for migrant labour from India.
