These results highlight that the bony labyrinth shape changes are driven by a neutral evolution. The different impact of the temperatures on the ruminant families is due to their different ecological preferences and of the colonization of new continents.

We demonstrated that Tragulidae, where a paedomorphosis of the #skull morphology is observed, possess a significantly low evolutionary rate of the bony labyrinth. insular species and clade with radiation have an increase of the evolutionary rates (pic key deer @Mennecart_b)

How does the BL change through time? Is the evolution polarity the same in different families? We used #geometricmorphometrics to explore shape variation of the inner ear, and test evolutionary rates within phylogeny for significant shifts cute illustration @CirsiumFerox 🙂

It has been a 8 years project, compiling the #3Ddata of 306 specimens of extant and extinct ruminants (oldest studied #fossil being ca. 34 Ma) from all over the world. It represents 191 species!

Tartarocyon etymology comes from the mythological Giant man-eater from the Pyrenees Mountains where it has been found (and cyon for dog). This bear-dog display a unique p4 morphology among European amphicyonids. It has been found in marine deposits dated to 12.8-12.0 Ma. 2/2

For #FossilFriday some news of Master student research. He may have some beaked #whales among the studied specimens 🐬🐬🐬! These strange #Dolphins possess tusks. I am wondering how they looked like during the middle Miocene 🤔Very nice work on the ear, very intriguing animals.

@VertEvo A very nice paper with wonderful fossils. Some of the specimens (most of ?) are hosted in our collections ;) #Basel Quercy specimens have a crazy preservation (3D mummified toad and salamander with last meal in the belly) !!!

For #FossilFriday congratulation to our Master student @BoulinJordan who finished today (co-supervised with @LauraDziomber). A very nice work on the #3D morphology of the #ruminants and what we can say about it (phylogeny, ontogeny, allometry).
