I always thought the change in SEGA Puyo's artstyle over time was kind of similar to how Modern Sonic's style changed over time
FWIW this isn't me sayin the new styles are bad (both have pros and cons), just different, perhaps in similar ways

FWIW my team work's on a dustbowl-cyberpunk series -> Think MadMax+BatmanBeyond. It's about what happens when 1st hero shows up 200 years after the world ends. We work to break as many harmful tropes as possible.
