The Nuckelavee or "devil of the sea" was a terrifying Orcadian sea creature, part horse, part man with no skin, and black blood. Its breath could cause droughts, spoil crops or bring about a plague. The only way to escape its wrath was to step into fresh water.

The Nuckelavee is Orkney's heavy-metal version of the centaur.
It appears as a horse and rider, but entirely skinless. As well as having long arms to scoop up unwary travellers, it also spreads plague and crop blight.
