There is a fun "medieval" tale that shows up in a lot of guidebooks for Ely & the Fens explaining why there are so many eels in the region. The story tells how St. Dunstan got mad at a bunch of impious & rebellious local monks & turned them (and their families) into eels. Bam. /1

In the Fens a girl about to be married would watch sparrows. If she saw one drinking from a puddle it meant her future husband would spend too much time in the pub. If she saw one having a dust bath it meant her husband wouldn't mind how dirty their house was.

7th Day of Advent. A Snow Goose is flying over the Fens, under a sky fretted with winter stars. She traces the water lines & frost ways & hedge tracks, plotting by steeple & manor & field, until she reaches the cottage & the Girl, half-orphaned & in need of a wise friend.

The Celtic Reed Month - 28 Oct to 24 Nov. The yellow iris has reed stems & thrives by marshes, ponds, fens etc. In Greek myth one of the goddess Iris’s tasks was to carry water in a ewer from the River Styx when any god had to take a solemn oath. Img: C. Barker
