@ProZD Admittedly have dabbled mainly in Paper Mario, but I love Yoichi Kotabe's style and it definitely influenced mine growing up, so I'd love to try and replicate it, honestly
In a 2018 interview with the French magazine Le Monde, og Mario artist Yoichi Kotabe stated that he based Bowser's finalized design on the Chinese Softshell Turtle, as he knew it to be a particularly aggressive breed of turtles https://t.co/I7VYD5BQ8p
Concept art by Yōichi Kotabe for Heidi, Girl of the Alps (1974), dir. Isao Takahata, Nippon Animation
A beloved classic around the world, Heidi was a huge boost to the careers of Isao Takahata and an up-and-coming Hayao Miyazaki -- the duo that went on to co-found Studio Ghibli
@TheRealSibsy The new stuff manages to perfectly recapture the feeling of Kotabe’s original art while also branching out and making it a bit more expressive, it’s exciting every time they release a new piece for little occasions!
@ringra15 Mine are a weird hodgepodge of things I like. Kotabe’s 90’s Mario art, Sugimori’s watercolor art, 80’s anime boxart, and then there’s Kirby.
At that point, I really think something akin to Kotabe's artstyle could help justify the design modernization and keep the distinctive outlines while also getting a lot more lively with its presentation of characters and giving Mario's 2D artwork the spotlight it deserves
Always wondered what Donkey Kong's cabinet art would look like in Kotabe's style. While not really "box" art per se, this was still really fun to put together! #redrawgameboxart
I wanted to draw Flynn like the Super Mario Bros. illustrations by Yoichi Kotabe...
Go ahead and include all of Shigehisa Nakaue’s work as well. He’s done an amazing job as Kotabe’s successor, in all of the recent games
I’m begging you, Nintendo... for Mario’s 35th anniversary, PLEASE release an art book containing all of Yōichi Kotabe’s Mario art
Yoichi Kotabe is a huge inspiration for my art. So I drew Peri in the Mario 3D World style!
I think I did a pretty good job. It's always satisfying replicating such distinct style!
It's ironic that Nintendo didn't want Rare's Diddy design to be Donkey Kong Jr. when their recent 2D art by Nakaue Shigehisa bears an incredibly strong resemblance to Kotabe Yoichi's from back in the day, even Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong. I love it. It's kinda like DK Jr. is back.
@Mevans2703 These artworks look so cool! As much as I love and appreciate Yoichi Kotabe’s 2D artstyle I feel that Itadaki Street has a little more details like the overalls and show a bit on lighting and shading effects on the appearance. 😁👍🏻
on this #MAR10Day let's take a moment to appreciate Yōichi Kotabe!
he's responsible for refining Miyamoto's sketches of the plumber, giving us the designs for the characters we know today! his style is endlessly charming and the series wouldn't be where it is today without him!!

Clean Art Commission for @RayTheSnivy
he wanted a mario maker outfit so I gave it the Yōichi Kotabe 2D Mario Art Style
TIL about Yoichi Kotabe, Toei animator and official illustrator for the Super Mario Bros. series. I never had a name to put to the art - I used to trace these illustrations from the boxes for hours as a kid https://t.co/szndsLevop
oh yeah, you didn't know? kotabe doesn't do the art anymore. dude hasn't even worked at nintendo since his retirement in 2007.
all the art from 3D land onward's done by a guy called Shigehisa Nakaue. honestly the fact that people couldn't even tell says a lot about his talent
