Sketches & unfinished work can be so appealing, sometimes more so than highly finished work: this is JW Waterhouse's "Mary Physick, the Artist's Step-sister" c.1880. https://t.co/7UINZXylY7 (#ShakepeareSunday, from King Lear, "Striving to better, oft we mar what's well")

“And hand in hand, on the edge of the sand,
They danced by the light of the moon.”
― Edward Lear, author of The Owl and the Pussycat, was born in 1812. Although best known for his nonsensical poems & limericks, Lear was also an accomplished painter & composer.

Thanks to I am reminded today is the birthday of the English landscape artist, traveller, and poet, Edward Lear (1812-1888).
On 13/14 April 1858 Lear visited Petra and made these watercolour sketches of the famous ruins of the Nabatean city. 1/6
