I used to think learning happened with clear, forward progression.

Reality is far more nuanced. Progression may/may not be visible. There is a plateau of messing around at the same level before learning enough to inch ahead. Most importantly, you are never done.

With Slayer's Frontier, I think I found a good balance in a crafting system in a context, that it won't be annoying and is a meaningful part of the progression. Time to bring it and other alternate progression systems to TRPGs via Magus! Who's up for some fishing & demons?
