Ridley Scott had seen a painting in Giger’s book “Necoronomicon” (as shown to him by Alien script originator Dan O’ Bannon who had worked with Giger on Jodorowsky’s “Dune”) and chose that as the basis of the alien pilot.
Scott drew that design into his storyboards.

The emotional exchange between Splinter and his mother makes me tear up every time, ever since the first time I saw the amazing storyboards. Coloring the characters in these shots meant a lot, and I love that embraced these types of thoughtful and stirring moments.
