My personal goal with this piece was to enhace my value structure, so, I started doing a value study before my underpainting, trying to define the big shapes and value relationships. Then, I move to place and work on the color key of the scene.

Working with a different technique on the splatters underpainting this time. It had a more undersea vibe, so I decided it needed to be a mermaid and her bioluminescent pals
Scan and a little cleanup. If this were a concept for a modeler I'd keep the lighting pretty flat so they wouldn't have to guess at shadow detail. For a painting that was an illustration or part of a pitch I'd tint this the color of the underpainting and work back into it a lot.

'Twas a good year. Learned a lot about colors and how to control them better, learned to incorporate more of my underpaintings into the final.
