Dr. Kenneth R. Smith was born in Austin, Texas in 1943. Got a Ph.D. at Yale in 1972. Taught courses in classical civilization, 19th c. European philosophy, ethics, political theory, nihilism, and esthetics. He has done artwork for Creepy, Eerie, Phantasmagoria, and Heavy Metal.

Just came across this manuscript in Yale (Landberg MSS 258-106) that includes stories about every Arab child's favorite fictional jokester: Juḥā جُحا (correctly pronounced Jiḥā جِحا).

Apparently, he wasn't as fictional as I assumed. He lived in 2nd century Iraq!
