1886年のこの日、日本の標準時を定める勅令（天皇による命令）が公布された。イギリスのグリニッジ天文台を通る子午線を経度0度とし、そこから9時間の時差となる東経135度が日本のほぼ中央を通過することから、同子午線上の時間を日本標準時とした。
