i was thinking their colors/palette would be inspired by lightning ridge opal, so blacks, purples, blues... maybe a dash of green... so that when she rolls up she mimics the gem a bit.

Other than my inability to have good contrasts, you mean? 🤔 Probably the way I inhale the paint Perylene Violet-- even in pieces where you don't see purples, I can assure you it's there in the mix somewhere... It's a weird one, but it just feels wrong to paint without it...
