On this assumption, is this a hint that his heart was once “black” and his experiences in nrc changed that???

There is a segment where you have to slot 4 slates into 4 walls. My assumption was that you needed to match the the slate color to the compass letter color, which would have leaned into the game's core "HUD is full of subtle visual cues" design philosophy.
