Both ended in that situation because of a being at the wrong place at the wrong time.

I always loved how preboot Archie handled it. Where basically if the characters mostly stick to robotnik if they knew him has that before, but he owns the Eggman empire so people slowly start to use both. Plus I like how Sonic bounces between the two.

Instead of being a haunted game, he's created from Dr. Robotnik finally having enough and trying to kill sonic with acid, but when he survives it isn't too peachy.
