1877年（明治10年）、大森貝塚を発見・発掘したアメリカの動物学者、エドワード・S・モース博士が来日。

6月20日、モース博士が汽車で横浜駅から新橋駅へ向かう途中で貝殻が堆積しているのを発見。
これが後に彼によって発掘調査が行われる大森貝塚であった。
