Proxy, or blockout is where you put all the different parts in, and try to 'approximate' the proportions of the concept. Shapes are still very soft and blobby, without detail, but they match the concept's position. The proxy is a guideline to see what you need to work on.

An experiment tonight in Perspective and Composition. I started making the one on the left and then used a 3D model to 'approximate' the same scene as it 'really' would look like in a similar space. The head is the only thing the same between them.
