The National Gallery is one of the finest globally with a rich & superb collection. Artists represented range from Vermeer to Velázquez & from Rembrandt to Raphael. The stunning Dutch collection is indicative of the Irish love of the art of the Low Countries.

This is one of my favourite little paintings by Rembrandt. Jeremiah (1630) is lamenting the destruction of Jerusalem. The feeling of sadness & loss is palpable. The miller’s son really understood & translated emotion. Viewed in the museum, the sadness is devastating.

The American artist Nathan Oliveira was profoundly influenced by Rembrandt and the later German Expressionists. His figures, most often solitary and distorted, reflect an existentialist view of man, tragic yet enduring.

Just messing here , doing Rembrandt's self portrait but in watercolour...lesson here is the more you try to get a likeness the more tighter your painting..I even put an highlight in where in his painting there wasn't one, I could carry more but the tighter it will become.

He loved Rembrandt & studied his beef pictures. These are paintings of animal flesh. Soutine took Rembrandt’s idea & liberated the concept further. In painting flesh he asks what is life. Mutton (c1920), Portrait of a Young Girl (c1920), Self-Portrait (c1920-1) & the Beef (c1920)

When he painted he saw sitters as themselves & peeled away his own preconceptions of them. He was following the path of Rembrandt’s. Village Idiot, Woman in Green, Woman Seated in an Armchair & Woman with a Tall Hat (all c1919)

His ability to grasp the psychological personality of his sitters was an early harbinger of the work of Rembrandt of the 17th C. Here’s Doge Gritti (1545), Pietro Arentino (1545) & Pope Paul III (1545-6). These are pungent explorations of personality
