Gustave Doré's (1832-1883) illustrations for The Divine Comedy

Doré was 23 years when he decided to create a series of images for an edition of Dante's Divine Comedy. Unable to convince his publisher to fund it he funded the first edition himself.

Le 23 janvier 1883, Gustave Doré meurt d'une crise cardiaque à l'âge de 51 ans à Paris. Il illustra de nombreux ouvrages comme les contes de Perrault ou la Divine Comédie de Dante et peignit notamment Le Christ quittant le prétoire, Les Saltimbanques ou encore Roland à Roncevaux.
