After his parents died in 1797 he moved his studio to their home in London, together with his assistants (including William Etty). Woman (c1796-8), Sir Samuel Shepherd (c1796) & Satan Summoning his Legions (1796-7). The latter may have been inspired by Henry Fuseli.

29 mars 1796 : Exécution à Nantes de François-Athanase Charette de La Contrie dit Charrette, chef de l’armée catholique et royale du Bas-Poitou et du Pays de Retz.
Lors de son exécution, il obtient de demander au peloton : « Lorsque je fermerai les yeux, tirez droit au cœur ».

On President's Day I find myself writing about Gilbert Stuart's 1796 Athenaeum portrait of Washington. (In 1980 the Boston Athenaeum sold it to @mfaboston and @smithsoniannpg.)
Acquired by the Athenaeum in advance of the 1832 GW centenary, you know it from the $1 bill.
James Macpherson (d. #OTD 1796) was "a mountebank, a liar, & a fraud”, Dr Johnson wrote & his "Ossian" was a forgery. It was, but it hit the European mindscape like a bomb and he became one of the foremost spiritual fathers of the Romantic Age. More on:
