Cool thing is you can actually see the beginnings of this change in juvenile specimens of lambeosaurines (like this Parasaurolophus). The nasals start out at on the top of the premaxillae, and then as the animal matures, that's when they get pushed under.

I don't know how we can show this more clearly w/o discovering a perfect uncrushed specimen: the crest of Dilophosaurus is formed by a dorsal expansion of the sinus that forms the antorbital fenestra (bigol snout window). There is NO evidence of separation between crest & fossa.
