Y'know, while they don't share any poses, PS1 X Mavericks ARE made up of smaller sprites, and... They certainly look like they gave minor edits to Slash's parts and assembled them into different poses, so you might be onto something.
Especially the hair, paws and muzzle.

Depends on perspective but also animal! Some artists draw cats with the same type of snarl as a canine but because of muzzle length thats not totally accurate! Cat snouts are shorter so there is less skin thus less wrinkles. Where K9s have longer ones = more skin = more wrinkles
