In high/late medieval Europe the tabernacle was closely aligned with altars, images, & dignitaries (king, bishop). In England “A tabernacle that dyd hange over the altar” at St. Botolph, Billingsgate & “the tabernacle of the sacrament” at St. Vedast, both connected to a pyx.

Folks tend to think of the Norman fleet invasion of England in 1066 & the Spanish Armada invasion of 1588. However there was another plan in 1348 where French Lords stopped fighting each other & united building a fleet to take the fight to England. But the Black Death stopped it!

Cistercian houses had a set Plan Dundrennan Abbey (Dumfries & Galloway) HS info board Newbattle (Dalkeith) watercolour 1991 & Alan Sorrell's reconstruction of Melrose. For some reason Melrose was a backwards Plan. Even Byland (Sorrell) in England followed the usual site Plan.
