Fate/Zero is the prequel. It takes place 10 years before FSN and a bunch of mages try to kill each other. It has a lot of fight scenes but is also very depressing and a lot of sad, fucked up shit happens. There is very little levity by comparison.

最高でしたね！本当に報われない感じが悲しくも残酷でまさに悪夢でしたね！この物語はやはり正義の味方の衛宮切嗣と悪の全てである言峰綺礼の二人の対決と言ってもかないませんね！
それが素晴らしい！
最終決戦の後に見れたギル様の裸がやはり輝いていましたね！

My expectations were all over the place for Gen Urubuchi's contentious prequel.
And appropriately so is my opinion.
Zero hits some tremendous highs and some obnoxious lows.
But the marks it hits are tremendously effective

劇場版空の境界は絶賛上映中。Fate/Zero(同人版)は2007年冬コミで完結したばかり。

だからこのふたりが肩を並べて戦闘……ちがった先頭を歩くという今となっては奇跡みたいな構図
