The exterior of the Scrovegni chapel Padua does little to imagine the treasure hidden within. In 1303 a young Giotto was commissioned to coat his interior with biblical scenes. The result was fifty hundred frescoes considered the most important work of the Trecento (14th century)

In 1460 Mantegna was appointed Court artist by Ludovico III Gonzaga at his Ducal Court in Mantua. There he created frescoes in the Camera degli Sposi, Ducal Palace, Mantua (1465-74). These document the Duke & his Court. His oculus is one of the triumphs of the Renaissance
