This day 199 years ago – 22 July 1822 – the world's first piece of animal welfare legislation (“Martin's Act”) was enacted, having been introduced by Irish MP Richard Martin.

Known as 'Humanity Dick,' Martin represented Galway County, and was also a founding member of the RSPCA.
