George III's 59 year reign is the longest ever by a British, English or Scottish monarch. Unlike his two predecessors in the House of Hanover, King George was born in Britain, spoke English as his first language and never visited the German territory of which he was also head.

George III died 1820, incapable of knowing or understanding that he was declared King of Hanover in 1814, or that his wife died in 1818. He was satirised as 'Farmer George' to mock his interest in mundane matters & to contrast his homely thrift with his son's grandiosity.

Queen Anne died 1714, but despite many pregnancies, she died without leaving an heir & became the last monarch of the House of Stuart. Under the Act of Settlement 1701, which excluded all Catholics, she was succeeded by her second cousin George I of the House of Hanover.
