Some beta versions of Sonic 1 (2013) featured the ability to have both Tails & Knuckles as Sonic's sidekicks at once. This was cut due to it being so intensive on phone hardware from the time that Christian Whitehead's iPhone burst into flames after two minutes of testing.

SEGA did try that early on in Sonic's life. Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine didn't feature Sonic at all (It isn't even implied that you are him), but featured Eggman and his minions.

There's also Knuckles' Chaotix, which ditched Sonic in favor for Knuckles and the Chaotix crew.
