Day 2 (December 19th): Zarbon beats Vegeta and takes him back to Freeza’s ship for healing and questioning. Freeza (via Appule) puts in a call for the Ginyu Force, who are due in 5 days. Kuririn+Dende are 5 hours away from the Great Elder, but decide to sleep first.
After the Saiyan battle, we skip to the hospital the next day. Kuririn and Gohan are due to be discharged in three days, while Goku will take far longer, barring any magic beans (fan lore has it that this is “Wukong Hospital, even though the sign looks more like “We—kong”)
Vegeta escapes into space, leaving Bulma and co to pick up the pieces. Night falls. On the ride home, Kuririn has an idea: Earth’s dragon balls are gone, but Vegeta mentioned that more balls might be found on Planet Namek.
Roshi tries to seal Piccolo up with the Mafuba, but messes it up and dies (he’ll be a zillion times better at this technique by the time Super rolls around). Chiaotzu doesn’t last much longer (clearly he’s jealous of Kuririn getting a head start in the death count championship)
After several attempts to find a girl to Roshi’s liking (plus Kuririn’s arrival), they finally hit pay dirt with the only occasionally homicidal Lunch. The group moves to a bigger island to begin hard-core training.

When Kuririn first comes knocking at Roshi’s door, he has already spent about 8 years training at Oorin Temple (based on real-world martial arts hub Shaolin Temple). 8 months later at the tournament, he gives his age as 13, making him 5 at most when he began his training.

Seems Toriyama forgot all about the Hoi-Poi Capsule in the middle of designing this mech as he was thinking how the handle & seat would realistically fold into itself.
It’s sadly unspecified precisely when or how Gohan came to be Roshi’s disciple, but he and fellow pupil Ox King trained by delivering milk just as Goku and Kuririn later do (I’ll have to save details on Ox King for another day).
Fun fact, there's only one spot in Dragon Ball Z: Budokai 2's campaign where you can get a Game Over with Goku.
Despite that, Z2 carries over all of the original Z1 Game Over portraits, including a portrait of Cell with Kuririn absorbed (who is not playable in Budokai 2).

Goku vs Tambourine Rematch: The King Piccolo arc has a dark beginning with Kuririn's death. After failing the first time, Goku is able to defeat his best friend's killer in an overwhelming display of power during their rematch.
Goku vs Kuririn: it's a great resolution to the dynamic established since Kuririn's debut and it showcases Goku's evolution as a fighter.
Honorable mention to Ten vs Yamcha, it sets up Ten as a solid antagonist in the tournament (unlike the previous one).
Goku likewise chants a more colloquial version of this prayer when he thinks he’s killed Sergeant Metallic, to ensure his soul will rest in peace (naturally he doesn’t realize he’s dealing with a robot), and Kuririn chants it to calm himself down against Dracula Man.
