The owl flew across the infernal river with ease, amidst the angry cries of the Styx. Persephone understood what she needed to do.
“I will sacrifice my human form,” she said to the hungry Styx. Then, she disintegrated into a flutter of wings.
“Turn back, child,” said Athena once more, but Persephone stood firm. Something — or someone — was calling to her from beyond the Styx.
Seeing her resolve, Athena sighed. “We must part, but upon you I shall bestow the gift of Foresight. May you see through the darkness ahead.”
They reached the Styx, a river deity that snaked around the Underworld. Souls lined up along her banks and paid her to cross, while those without coins were left behind.
Persephone’s heart sank. “I have nothing.”
They entered the cavernous silence of the Underworld, where countless souls drifted without purpose.
“Who are they?” asked Persephone.
“The Lost,” said the owl.
The owl revealed herself to be Athena, goddess of wisdom and war.
“Turn back, child,” she said. “Only Death awaits you here.”
“With Death comes new life,” said Persephone.
The owl was losing, and so Persephone sang a song of morning dew and spring rain. She sang of new warmth and gentle winds.
The snake listened, entranced, then slithered away.
