Guillaume Brune was made a Marshal of France by Napoleon in 1804. During the 1799 War of the Second Coalition he defended Amsterdam against British-led forces. Following Napoleon’s 1815 downfall, he was murdered by a Royalist mob who threw his mutilated body in the River Rhône.
