You know what I really appreciate about Sentinels of The Multiverse? They've got a lot of subtle diversity sprinkled throughout the game. You've got a hawkeye expy with autism, a Flash expy who's in a loving sapphic relationship, and a maori hulk expy to name a few.

The blond to brunette is a range. I like to have one character in a group have a definite, solid hair color (that is definitely a blond’s blond) then given other characters subtle in betweens. Remember that in cartooning you can press colors to greater extremes.

Something like this isn't so extreme & cringy as your example. It's more subtle, conveys the motion & doesn't detract from the overall image & experience but gets the point across.

Can it be done in linework? Sure, DWJ does it in this example. They're both valid techniques.
