#sciartportfolioweek So let's pop up this reconstruction of an extinct #Chironomid #midge, along with its species-specific larval mouthparts. I mostly get asked to do slightly less exacting #naturalhistoryillustration, so I love the challenges work like this poses. #sciart

Common #frog R temporia. We raised froglets from tadpoles from the river wye and just returned them. Odd to see them in rivers? Love frogs & hope this population avoid the vile #ranavirus, being studied by @froglifers & the#gardenwildlifehealthproject

This is a European otter, Lutra lutra, eating a Brown trout.
Although lots of people have seen otters at The Warren in #hayonwye I'm yet to spot one. Brown trout we see often, leaping out of the river.

It's the only time I've illustrated a horse, im actually really scared of them. For some it's spiders... For me it's horses.

Here is a pair of Dabchicks or Little grebe, Tachybaptus ruficollis.
They bob underwater when disturbed and pop up at some distance, so can be hard to see.

This proud beast is the Sika deer, Cervus nippon.
Introduced to the UK in 1860 they now range widely across conifer forests and northern heathlands, hybridizing with red deer.
They're very vocal; whistling barking and grunting
