Even then, there's TONS of moveset potential, the other characters can be spirits, zero dimension as a stage, etc.

Sonic, Shadow, and Silver are similar to Goku, Vegeta, and Trunks. Sonic and Goku are the main characters, Shadow and Vegeta are the rivals of said main characters, and Silver and Trunks are both from the future they want to save. And both trios can transform.

Silver was inspired by Trunks from Dragon Ball Z. Both characters travel to the past in order to prevent an apocalyptic future. In Sonic 06's script at the end of Silver's description, it even says "Think Trunks from DBZ". Both characters can also transform.
