Shout out for Make Way for Ducklings. Compared to most of the brilliantly illustrated and colorful picture books today, Make Way may seem like an Ugly Duckling, but it is still a swan.

May 1 Is National Mother Goose Day. I was born in a cotton patch in 1950, and I saw very few picture books until I left home. Yet, picture books became a huge part of my life. I credit Mother Goose and The Cow That Jumped Over the Moon for that.

Children's Book Week Is Celebrating Its 100th Birthday. Jessie Wilcox Smith designed the first poster for the event in 1919. Smith began her study of art in Philadelphia in 1888. I dare say that she was an artist who also illustrated.

Another great older mouse book by Kevin Henkes. Lilly's Purple Plastic Purse. Henkes uses excellent gesture and movement to create dynamic characters in his mouse books. This is another Must Read.

Kevin Henkes sort of went a different direction, but I believe that his mouse books like Chrysanthemum were his best! Chrysanthemum has a great message. The illustrations are wonderful. It is a Must Read!

Happy I just realized that kids + books might be the thing I draw most often. So, here's to all the books & people who make them. And to the kids who love them. Cheers!
