FAIRY FOOD Never partake in food transformed by fairy glamour. In Robert Herrick 1591–1674, fairies darkly feast on beards of mice, withered cherries, a mandrake's ears, a mole's eyes, a slain stag’s tears & the broken heart of a nightingale🎨Fitzgerald 1859

There is much folklore about how roses got their red colour. Many of these were tales of divine origins, like this from Herrick:

"'Tis said, as Cupid danced among the gods, he down the nectar flung,
Which on the white rose being shed, made it ever after red."

How love came in I do not know,
Whether by the eye, or ear, or no;
Or whether with the soul it came
(At first) infused with the same;
Whether in part ’tis here or there,
Or, like the soul, whole everywhere.

- Robert Herrick, 'Of Love : A Sonnet'

An olive-branch before me lay;
And seeing it, I made a stay,
And took it up, and view'd it; then
Kissing the omen, said Amen;
Be, be it so, and let this be
A divination unto me - Robert Herrick
