I went forward just calling this comic an Asian/SEA fantasy as most people wouldn't know what Hmong was anyways, and those who were Hmong would be able to understand when they see it.
Over time, more and more Hmong people (particularly queer Hmongs!) have reached out to me!
so writing a story about gay/trans Hmong men just felt very... not-Hmong. if you're not upholding Hmong values, it's taboo, a break from culture.
this is an identity issue many of us LGBTQ Hmongs face: the conflict of having to pick a side, rejecting being Hmong or being queer.
for the uninitiated, Hmong traditional values are patriarchal, cis-heteronormative, and strict to gender roles. there is a LOT I could cover in that regard, but unlike other groups that only developed such values from colonization, ours was always fully integrated in culture.
as AAPI month comes to a close, I wanted to talk about the reflecting I've been doing this month wrt my webcomic REEDS, a queer fantasy romance, being a Hmong story, and how uniquely difficult it has been to be open about that 🧵

As things are easing a little, we managed to get down the #Devon coast to the village of Beer. Great to see the sea again. I discovered a #fishmonger on Sea Hill and bought a Brill for dinner. Lovely and well worth a #painting.
@FoodDrinkDevon @VisitDevon
@Clawnyan @mellocringe Hmong Deez nuts goteem eheheheheh
just a random thing from #TGCF and hc being hmong, you know that poison-sucking scene? this probably wasn't intentional, but there's actually a whole THING in hmong about drinking blood from someone's hand- it's a ritual between lovers to bind their souls together FOREVER
@heartmush Hi! I’m Shell! I’m a Hmong American who likes to draw my ocs a lot and you read about them on webtoon canvas. It’s called “Just Peachy!” https://t.co/80wCLowkFH
As a Hmong person, seeing Hua Cheng's designs with the large silver necklaces rang some bells in my head. It's the familiar large round/crescent shape that many of us wear. Thinner, circular designs like this are more common with men as women wear larger, more elaborate designs.

Sometimes the food goes bad before you use it. Then what?
Just don't be like Salamon Salamon! In 1390, the London fishmonger was charged w/ hiding his bad eels in someone else's cellar. This was his second offense: earlier he was caught slipping rotting eels into a local well!

Hi friends! I have yet to receive any stimulus checks; I'm currently waiting on my tax refund but it's delayed and it could be up to 9 wks 💀 Directly support an Asian artist and receive a unique piece of art 💖
If there's one meaningless fanboy gripe I have with DC Comics Warner Bros is the depiction of Rose Wilson. She's one of the first ever Hmong comic characters but over the years, she's been depicted as either Hmong, Cambodian, White, or sometimes a different type of Asian.
