Super Mario World contains an unused "reaction sprite" for Yoshi, in which he appears shocked or suprised. Below is a mock-up of Yoshi reacting to an in-game event using the sprite.
Sadly the colors not being really bright and poppy in the ingame sprite makes it feel a little weaker to me. But I still think the design feels well assembled to be converted to such a sprite.
