IRL pang tails - scaled, flat undersides, with rigid sides that allow them to cover and defend themselves. it's long, so it can be used as a counter weight so their front legs can be used for digging.

Here is Kadence's new reference image! I do intend to add a back view and a few expressions down the road. but for now this is enough. The most important aspect of the back view is that her feathers are completely white, only the undersides have the fading yellow as seen here.

I just solid color it and then i add teardrop shaped blobs of color burn on the underside of the spikey parts
And sometimes I do the pointy highlights on top of the solid color
