I do like seeing other peoples methods, hmm, so just in case its useful heres how I do it. I ahve a master layer thats just a Silloutte it controls all colour. then theres a flat colour layer. Then hard shadows, then soft shadows, then highlights, etc.

haha, the pencil sketch seems very crooked to me. I picked the base color close to the original from the episode. Then I add the shadows, then put a light orange on the background and dark blue on the foreground. In blue I compensate for a too warm color scheme.
