I’m a huge Final Fantasy fan, but can someone please explain to me why early-game linearity and outlandish lore worked for FFX with its mass hallucination athletes and world-ending whale yet somehow don’t for FFXIII with its religious dystopia and indisputably badass female lead?

Here's some trivia:
The original intent was to be cool and outlandish in contrast to so-called "cute and flawless" timely trends.

But in retrospect, Sonic is still winds up looking cute, as he was only made to look "edgy" in reference to other mascot characters at the time.
