i am indeed defending the latter! i'm less referring to the rotoscoping dance videos cause even with tracing i know those take hrs & hrs with the added animation element. i'm referring to this particular style of art below - mostly faceless, devoid of personality, etc

OK, some of the alleged instances of traced artwork I've seen before don't really feel like actual direct tracing, but rather artists using a pre-existing drawing/pose as a reference. THIS on the other hand, yeah, Todd Wahnish traced character work from Sonic X WHOLESALE🤦

Speaking as an artist:
Referencing and tracing is ok, TO AN EXTENT.
I use references, I also trace but it all depends on when and how you use them. I only trace images to simplify the reference so that it’ll be easier for me to understand. I DO NOT trace and then claim it as mine

Personally I tend to draw my characters clothes pretty close to the skin, almost tracing it unless its baggy. Not sure if that helps
