FUSELI'S PUCK (c.1790) has bat wings rather than butterfly wings; his enchantments are far from innocent. The other fairies flee in this image where he is full of movement. He boasts he can 'put a girdle round the earth in forty minutes' (MSND)

Happy Midsummer from ! Dr Johnson, in his Preface to Shakespeare (1765), talks of ‘the loves of Theseus and Hippolyta combined with the Gothic mythology of fairies’, so here's some Oberon, Titania and Puck with Fairies Dancing by William Blake, c. 1786
